If you plan on driving in Delaware County this weekend, you need to be aware of increased police presence. The Northern Delaware County DUI Taskforce has announced it will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, May 29, in Haverford Township.

As a law firm dedicated to defending the rights of motorists, Omnis Law Group, LLC wants to ensure our community stays informed about local law enforcement initiatives and understands what these operations mean for drivers.

Police Patches

Formed in September 2009, the Northern Delaware County DUI Taskforce is a collaborative effort comprised of law enforcement officers from five local townships: Haverford, Marple, Newtown, Radnor, and Springfield. Over its nearly 17 years of operation, the task force has conducted more than one hundred operations. According to recent data, their enforcement efforts have resulted in almost 200 DUI arrests, close to 50 underage drinking citations, over a thousand motor vehicle code citations, and more than two thousand warnings issued.

The planned sobriety checkpoint will take place in a fixed, highly visible location where traffic is systematically stopped. The task force utilizes checkpoints as a proactive visual deterrent to discourage impaired driving before it happens, while simultaneously identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road. While the task force frames these operations as vital measures for roadway safety, checkpoints must strictly adhere to specific legal guidelines under Pennsylvania law. If police fail to follow proper protocol during a stop, it can significantly impact the validity of any subsequent arrest.

A DUI arrest can happen to anyone, and the consequences of a conviction – ranging from license suspension to hefty fines and jail time) – can be life-altering. You do not have to face the legal system by yourself. If you or someone you know has been stopped at a checkpoint or arrested by a roving patrol, it is critical to act fast. The experienced criminal defense attorneys at Omnis Law Group know how to scrutinize police procedures, challenge breathalyzer or blood test results, and fiercely protect your rights.
